Thinking about checking out Grenada but finding it dang near impossible to travel to from Detroit without spending a night in Miami or somewhere, and even then it's well over a 24 hour venture. What's the secret to getting to the southern islands without spending 4 of 7 days en route?

Caribbean Air has a direct flight from JFK twice a week in the afternoon. You could try to book an early flight from Detroit to JFK, thats what Kim and I did last year only from Buffalo.
Drink all day at home, your friends worry about you; do it on vacation and they say "what a good time you're having". Save your friends needless worry, travel more!

That's a tough one, perhaps through NYC? I know Caribbean Airways has direct flights. Also check out www.redmangoapartmentstruebluegrenada.com

I was afraid this was gonna be the case! I finally found the various JFK and Toronto flights after looking on OAG instead of just searching on the usual travel sites. These flights don't show up on the Travelocities et al at all, I'm guessing because Caribbean Air and the others don't make their inventories available to them.
Looks like a 10 day chunk is going to be the minimum time to allot. Darn. Guess there's a reason we keep ending up in the USVI or BVI. Kinda hard to compete with that convenience.

What's the secret to getting to the southern islands without spending 4 of 7 days en route? Checking ExpertFlyer.com, as someone above mentioned, there is a Wed and Sat flight on Caribbean Airways from JFK at 1:55. There should be a multitude of flights from DTW to JFK that will get you to JFK in plenty of time to take that 1:55 flight. Arrives in Grenada at 7:25, so it looks like only about an 8-9 hour travel time for you.
