Feb 15 Another Day at the Beach
I made breakfast at the hotel, fried eggs with homemade corned beef hash, Kim’s favorite dish although this was the first time she had mine even though it is a regular on Skyelark.

Enjoying the view from the balcony in the morning
We took our morning walk and found a wandering dog that was grateful for the leftover hash we brought along with us knowing dogs wander the beach in the morning. I decided that since today was my last chance for sushi I would go to the fish market and try to pickup a fresh tuna. Kim stayed behind and I would meet her on the beach later; I took a bus to St. Georges and headed for the fish market. I noticed the meat market was open and a couple butchers were at work inside; one was selling pork and the other beef, the beef looked amazing, very dark red and fresh, I was tempted to get some but had planned on sushi since before leaving. It’s no wonder it looked so fresh though, next to the meat market is a building, and I forget the local term for it, but there big letters on the wall that spell out “LAIRS”; inside they keep the animals waiting to be slaughtered, two cows were in the pen with not a very promising future in sight.

Awaiting a visit from the butcher
I went over to the fish market and chose a nice small yellow fin tuna from one of the vendors, it was 7.50 EC (less than $3 US) a pound and I paid 5 EC to have it filleted. I picked up some christophines at a veg stand just outside the market and an order of white rice from the Chinese restaurant at the cruise ship port then went back to the hotel.

The fruit and vegetable market in St. Georges
I had a drink on the balcony, checked e-mail then got ready and headed out to the beach where Kim was sitting with Norm and Lulu and was enjoying the hot Grenadian sun. Today was the day the police vote in the elections, the general election being Feb.19, so alcohol was not allowed to be sold on the beach as part of Grenada’s election laws. It was a shame for the guys trying to make a living on the beach, there were ships in port, tourist on the beach, and they couldn’t sell any beer or drinks. I heard on fellow say “I spent all day in the hot sun and no money”; there won’t be another ship in port till Wednesday so this was their last chance to make some money for the next 4 days. Interestingly, the resorts were selling alcohol as was the supermarket; and you have to think of the people who came to Grenada for the first time on the cruise and expected to enjoy a day at the beach with a few drinks, what will their impression of the country be. Norm invited Kim and I up to their place for some drinks in the evening, so we went home and I had some lunch, the sushi and sashimi I had been dreaming of.

Sushi for lunch
It was my first attempt and didn’t come out two bad, I used up half of a fillet, the meat just melted in your mouth. We had some drinks and got ready to go then called George, one of the beach vendors, and he gave us a lift up to their place. It’s right next to the golf course at the top of a very long and steep hill; I give them a lot of credit for walking down it everyday on their way to the beach. The apartment is very spacious and modern with all the conveniences, including a laundry room. There is are two patios, one out front and another off the side with a charcoal grill, both have great views of the nicely landscaped yard. They will be staying here for two months and then will never return, Norms philosophy is once you’re retired and you visit a place, why go back, there are too many other beautiful places to see in the world. After a few rounds of peach daiquiris, we caught a ride down the hill with another couple that were there and walked back to the hotel. I prepared dinner, blackened tuna steaks with my home blend Cajun spice, christophine and vegetable fried rice with the last of the sushi rice; I cooked up some curried fish head, also from the tuna, but Kim doesn’t care for those. We had planned to go out to a little local bar down the road, but after another drink and a busy day we called it a night.
