We sailed in Belize last month, as well as saw a little bit of the interior. Here are some highlights:

Background: I've sailed and been to many parts of the Carribean. I've sailed on monohulls and cats. Although I'm U.S. Sailing certified through bareboat (with Offshore) I still need a captain with my family, since no one else really sails.
(You wouldn't want an intern taking care of your sick loved one even if he or she did graduate medical school!) When I sail with my friends we have several experienced sailors so we go bareboat. I've always chartered with The Moorings. This was our first time with TMM.

Prologue:
We arrived in Belize on a Saturday, sailed a 42 ft. cat Sunday through Thursday from San Pedro to Plascencia, went to Cha Creek Thursday through Monday, and flew home Monday. We were 2 families: 4 adults and 4 girls, 8 through 14 years old.

Getting to Belize:
No problem. BWI to Houston, then to Belize. We had hot barbecue airline sandwiches on Continental! Great airport. Who doesn't love coming down the stairs from the plane to the tarmac upon arrrival (instead of a sterile jetway)? They have pineapple Fanta and Belikin beer. Cigar smokers: The only place we saw Cuban cigars in good condition was the airport, but the prices were astronomical and in my opinion, not worth it. Single Malt scotch drinkers: Now that's a bargain! The airport has a good selection and you'll never see prices lower, anywhere. Wine drinkers: Forget it. This isn't a wine vacation. The best selection is in San Pedro. Red wine people are advised to stick with the most recent Chilean vintaages.
Took the flight to San Pedro on Tropic Air. My 14 yr old got to sit next to the pilot while, according to her, he talked on his cell phone. At the San Pedro "airport" we disembarked and were directed to baggage claim. It consisted of a little roped off area on the side of the runway. The baggage handler lined up all the bags from the plane next to the rope and politely asked each one of us which one was ours, and then handed off the appropriate bag. What a break from the post 9/11 world. We then began our "long journey" to the Sunbreeze Hotel. We each picked up our bags walked 20 yards out of the airport, into the street, and then 10 more yards into the hotel!!!

Next: Sailing Belize
