I generally have pretty good luck in dealing with airline issues and I know this one is partially of my own making since I could have purchased a fully refundable ticket, but I didn't. And now, in pursuit of a refund...........

Has anybody here been able to receive a cash refund back to their credit card for a JB non-refundable ticket for a flight cancelled due to the Covid 19 situation and St. Maarten's decision to close the airport to all air traffic?

I know I read it somewhere that some have gotten full Jet Blue refunds but I can't remember who it was or where I read it. It seems to me there may even have been a TA who said to stand firm because they would try to issue a travel bank credit instead of a full refund.

Thanks in advance for any help you might offer.

Respectfully,

pat

Pat, to the best of my knowledge, it depends on who cancelled. If you cancelled, you get a credit. If Jet Blue cancelled, I believe you get a refund.

First of all, thank you for your response. That was my understanding, too, but JB is maintaining that doesn’t apply in this current situation since in reality it wasn’t JB but the SXM island government who actually made the cancellation. The only way it would apply, according to them anyway, would be if I had purchased the more expensive full price ticket and then a full refund would absolutely be in order.

I don’t know why I bother with JB since I always seem to have these problems with them while others sing their praises from the rooftops. But I have to say, the CSR I spoke with was totally pleasant and truly wanted to be accommodating. It was her supervisor who I also spoke with that offered the option of providing information regarding anyone who had gotten the refund.

In the end, it won’t be the end of the world if I don’t get the refund to my cc but it will serve to further reinforce my intention of booking AA whenever possible.

From what I went through last week, I think you would need to speak to a representative to get the CC refund. When I did it on line there was only a Travel Bank option, even though the flight was canceled by JB. I just took the credit on the assumption it would be used in the fall.

Delta on the other hand, had a refund option on their web page.

I did actually speak with a very pleasant CSR but while she knew and fully understood what I was saying, she spoke to a supervisor who said it couldn’t be done that way under the actual circumstances of the government being the one who cancelled ALL flights. But if I could give her a record locator of someone who actually got a full refund directly TO THEIR CREDIT CARD as opposed to the travel bank, then everyone should be treated the same way.

I think this is probably a wasted effort on my part but I’m home and bored and have plenty of time to spend so why not? And perhaps others will benefit from my efforts, too.

It sounds like they may be claiming "force majeure", which is just a little weaselish by my reading of their Contract of Carriage, but I'm not a lawyer.

Thanks Kim, but no. I’m looking for the person, a TA I think, who said they got a full CASH refund back to their credit card for a recent JB cancellation caused by the corollavirus.

We had the same problem in trying to return home from SXM. After AA canceled our flight, we booked with JB and then they cancelled. Finally, at the airport and thanks to our happening to discover Janice Brooks, AA ticketing agent extrodinaire, we were able to exit on AA. BUT, we have credit with AA and JB for flights unused. Unfortunately, they have to be used before the end of the year, at least as of now. Kind of a bummer because we have no desire or plans to travel this year, at least as of now. Yes, I did send a letter to the AA President telling him about Janice and what a treasure she is for the stranded traveler. While we were waiting in the rebooking line she helped 4 or 5 travel groups spending a lot of time with each group. We heard her yell "Because if I don't eat, I'll keel over". It was after 2PM at this time. A relief agent appeared and very quickly dispensed with the next two couples in line. Finally, it was our turn. This agent said "Sorry, there are no flights and the airport will be closing tomorrow". We tried asking about any flight to anywhere in the States..."No, there is nothing". Then who should appear but the agent who had gone for lunch. She took care of everything, got us seats on the next flight to Miami and then home the next day. I asked for her name and told her I would be writing to AA. Thank you again Janice.

dave--thanks so much for posting that story! I am going to start a new thread regarding the kindness of strangers, as this story should not get kind of lost in this thread. I'm sure there are many other stories of those who have been helpful among a world gone mad.

Dave,

Glad you had such a positive situation amidst all the negativity that is out there right now, and that you are home all safe and sound. That really is the best place to be right now.

There is a young woman who works for the company that more or less runs the airport and we had an incredible experience with her once upon a time, too. I wouldn’t be at all surprised if your agent and mine are one and the the same but maybe not. But It does your heart good when someone goes that extra mile and acts as if they really do care. The woman I spoke with at JB today, Cecelia, meets that same definition.

Hi Pat:
This is from my TA friend:
If the airline cancels, demand a refund, not travel credit. They are required to refund. Ask for a supervisor, that should do it. If not, threaten to file a claim with the DOT (dept of transportation). They will refund.
And if you booked thru Expedia etc, you are on your own. They will not do it for you. Have the ticket number available.
Best of luck,
Ellen

Thanks, Ellen, but I’ve already been down that path.

Jet Blue maintains that under a typical cancellation of flight BY THE AIRLINE that would be the case but since this flight was cancelled by the island, they maintain that rule doesn’t apply.

I booked through JB and I’ve actually spoken to a supervisor with not much success. The only concession they will make is to refund to my credit card IF I can provide them with a record locator number of someone who has already gotten that done, I read on line somewhere last week where a poster did just that but I can’t remember where I saw it and reading through posts got old after about an hour with no success.

But again, thank you and your TA friend for the suggestion.

Pat--Not that they WON'T extend it past then, but as of now, has the ISLAND cancelled all incoming flights past April 1? I don't think so. Or, maybe they have. Hard to keep up. Best wishes. I figure that our money for our flights in May-June is just down the toilet.

Below is a link to the ONLY approved ( by the PM) flights to PJIA (French airport is closed). The plane can bring no passengers in, only take out. I believe all of our cases are tied to travel.

Will they extend as time goes on? Who knows, but I hope not for awhile. I think everyone is thinking in two week increments just now.

It is very confusing. There's FB posts from the government and the PM almost every hour.

Pat, I am sorry the info was not helpful. Gary Leff also says it is the law that the airlines must give a refund:

Just came upon this article, Pat. You might try calling again and referring to the DOT regulations.

Thanks, Carol. I had already seen the article but the bottom line so far is Jet Blue really doesn’t care. They’re holding all the high cards in that they’ve got my money and that of every other person whose vacation dollars have been confiscated by them and they have no intentions of giving it back beyond in the form of travel bank credits.

Carol,

Yes I did and they could personally care less about DOT regulations and US laws as opposed to citing their own contract of carriage.

I couldn’t find the person who wrote about receiving a full like-kind credit back to their credit card but I did find some interesting opinions and I did cite some of the comments made by Gary Leff of View From the Wing about DOT regulations and the fact they’re breaking the law, as well as comments from The Points Guy regarding consumers being entitled to a full refund (as opposed to a credit in their travel bank....) under US law. I was asked if I was an attorney?

Bottom line, I’ve wasted all the time I wish to waste on Jet Blue and in the future, as in my personal past, I will fly them only when it suits my personal convenience; the price is right; AA is not available for my needs; and lastly, I have no other alternative.

And for the record, and as in the past, AA still remains as my preferred carrier when available even when they do change their schedules all the time.

Sincere thanks to everyone who attempted to help me.

Respectfully,

pat

OK, thanks for the note. At the risk of sounding like a lawyer, sounds like a great class action suit! laugh And NO, I don't handle such things!!! grin

What about calling the credit card company and telling them you're refuting the charge in lieu of COVD-19? It worksd for me but then it wasn't Jet Blue.

You can "refute" or "contest" or "dispute" the charge and it will often delay the billing but in this case, JetBlue can say they are in the right (even thought they may not be) and the charge will eventually be charged back to the card used. It is not a sure thing for getting a credit when one does this.

I thought in order to dispute a charge, it had to be done within like 60 days or so of the original charge? ..or maybe not.

Carol, RonDon and ruralcarrier,

In all honesty, I’m done here.

No class action although that would be an interesting point, and no cc dispute. I wasn’t looking at a ton of money here in the first place and I may get to choose to use the travel bank credit at some point, but it was about principle to me. It was MY money and I would like to be in control of it rather than the airline. As I said, it’s the principle of the issue and not the money.

When I questioned when the decision to invoke Force Majeure came into being there was no answer, and to me it was a legitimate question because JB did provide a full cash back credit to my cc when Irma took place in 2017 (I think?) and that was clearly either a weather related situation or the government decision it was unsafe to land planes and hotels were not available to accommodate passengers, all of which should fall under the Force Majeure clause.

The only way they will deal with my refund beyond the travel bank is if I could find that person who said they had their monies refunded to their credit card along with their record locator - the airline stated if one person received the credit back then all should but that was a week ago. I got tired of reading old posts here and on Facebook.

I tried people but it just didn’t work.

Respectfully,

pat

Not sure on that.

According to the Fair Credit Billing Act of 1974, it is 60 days from the statement (received) date of the erroneous charge.

JetBlue announced tonight that they are extending the expiration date for certain travel credits. Here's a link to the video announcement. The travel credits portion begins at 3:08.
