Hi All,

Figured it was time to post the second part of my trip report. Especially since I just got back from another trip to the BVI a few weeks ago.

Don;t forget my disclaimer from the first part of my trip report. Report is STILL LONG!!

MONDAY - August 4th - Off to Anguilla

Up at 8:00 a.m. My flight to Anguilla is at 1:10 p.m. Departure tax from Beef to Anguilla is $10. The woman who works at the counter seems like she woke up on the wrong side of the bed because she is rude when asked any questions . Wonder why the government has someone so rude working in an area which constantly takes care of visitors to Tortola. In my case, it definitely left a bad impression. It was cool that everybody else I dealt with at the airport (ticket agents, security) were very nice.

FRIDAY - August 8th - Back from Anguilla

He picks me up from the airport and we're off to the market as I'm off to Jost tomorrow. Yeah, this is just a pit stop to replenish my stash for Jost. Back to Rhymers again. Same room. Rest, and off to Quitos where it's kinda crowded, but not too - know what I mean? Soon Linda (who I met on the old TT board) and who has lived in Tortola for a while comes in. Turns out, she's going back home to the states. Says she's missing her family. Wow! If I lived in Tortola, I would NEVER leave. My family would have to come visit me. LOL. Nah!! That's just a dream on my part, as my mom has already told all her friends, and of course, ME, that as long as she's alive, I can't leave NYC. OH WELL!! I'm so sad that Linda is leaving as I always look forward to seeing her when I visit Tortola. She's definitely one of the nicest people I've met during my trips to the BVI. I hate goodbyes, so, of course, my eyes well up when we hug goodbye.

I do some dancing , then take a breather to have a drink . Look up, and there's a friend of mine from Jost sitting next to me. We talk for a while, and he offers to take me to Jost in his boat. Wow, no worries about the ferry schedule, I can go whenever he's ready. I love my BVI friends.
Do some more dancing and drinking, then back to Rhymer's at 3:00a.m. Good night, Irene.

SATURDAY - August 9th, Jost-bound

Up to get some light packing done as I'm only going to Jost for two days. We're not going over till 5 or 6pm so once I finish packing, I do the only correct thing after a night of drinking and dancing at Quitos. I go back to bed. Up at 4pm and it's off to West End. Pack up the boat and we're off. I'M SO EXCITED.

While I love everything about the BVI, hands down, I love Jost the most.

A little about my first time visiting Jost. A friend of mine in Roadtown was going over to Jost to fix a fridge that was on the blink. Turns out it was at Pink..(well what is now named Corsair's).. He fixed the fridge and said let's take a ride up to the campground. Ivan fixed some fish, we ate and he showed me the grounds and the huts that were up at that time. Now, I'm a city girl and the only camping I've ever done was in summer camp where everything was inside the bunkhouse.
I fell in love with the campground during that short visit and told Ivan that I would be back. That was years ago, and I don't know whether he believed me or not at the time, but I think he does now.

We reach Jost, my friend ties up the boat in front of Foxy's and I take a deep breath. I'M HOME. Take off my shoes, stroll to the bar and Ralphie makes me a pina colada. Load up the jeep and we're off to Ivan's campground.

It's dark, but I see Ivan has made some changes. There's an extension to the main house where you can sit and drink or just relax. Stackable containers to put your food stuff in (ALRIGHT!!). Great big hug for Ivan. It's truly amazing that he always looks the same, (a little grayer) but basically the same. Always smiling, always in a good mood, and, of course, always, as he calls it "making noise." (playing his guitar).

Up the path to my hut "JABA." Every time I come to Jost, I plan to actually sit on the porch and enjoy the quiet, but, so far, I haven't done it. This time, by hook or by crook, I will actually sit on the porch, if only for a few minutes. Hot dogs for dinner, grab the hammock, and just lay there looking at, and thinking about -NOTHING AT ALL!!! I LOVE IT!!! After what seems like forever, my body tells me, it's time for bed. Up the path to Jaba, do a little reading, and fall asleep listening to the crickets. Wake up in the middle of the night (at least I think it is, by some loud noises outside my hut. Too tired to investigate, I turn over and go back to sleep.

SUNDAY - Day 11 - SEEDON'T

Up at 9am. Back to sleep. Up again at 10:30 so I decide to stay up and fix breakfast for myself and Ivan. Lazy it up for a while, then decide to go snorkeling and take some underwater pics. Gonna try the right side first (not my favorite spot since the water is cloudy most of the time). Walk up the beach, over the hill, past Soggy Dollar, Gertrude's and Seddy's One Love bar. Past Sea-Doo (oh no, they' really here), and on to the far side of the beach.

Wow!! I get a break today. I see some beautiful fish and play hide and seek with one of them, until I finally get close enough to get a pic. I hear an awful sound that doesn't sound like a boat. Surface, and it' one of those ATV's from See-Doo that this guy is riding up and down on the beach. He looks at me and I give him a dirty look as if to say "I don't want you here in my quiet space, go away!!!" Finally, he goes his merry way, up the road I guess. I'm already thinking about my future trips to Jost, and how I will not be snorkeling the right side too often.

Finish and walk back down the beach, stopping at Soggy Dollar, not to socialize but to say hey to K.C. and the nice young lady (I always forget her name) in the boutique). Tell K.C. to give me something for the pain and my painkiller and I grab a hammock to vegetate. In my own zone, I finally take out this report and do some serious work on the previous day(s) reports. Say my goodbyes and head back to camp. Dinner tonight - tuna fish sandwiches. Meet a guy from Pittsburgh named Mike and we sit and talk for a while. I make my sandwiches, grab some lemonade, and one of the chaise lounges on the beach and look out at - NOTHING AT ALL

It starts raining and I ignore it for a while, finally, deciding to go back to the main house and sit and talk to Annie. I first met Anie right here on Jost years ago. She's from Australia and her and her partner do charters so she visits Jost kinda often. There are several shell creations around Ivan's and Annie's responsible for many of them. Annie shares her red wine with me and we talk about our love for Jost. Annie says no matter how often she comes to Jost, she always cried when it's time to leave (her and I are very alike in that respect, and I tell her so)

I call my youngest daughter, and the first thing she says is "I miss you mommy? You know how when your children say that it makes your heart melt and you feel homesick and want to go back home to them? My daughter is 27 now, with her own kids, so.... NO, .I DON'T WANNA LEAVE and...NO, I'M NOT FEELING HOMESICK!! Finally, off to bed around 12midnight. Good night Irene!! Or so I thought. Remember the noise I heard last night, well, it's back again, tonight. I'm not looking out there. (Found out later on, it was probably goats getting their grub on - LOL)

MONDAY - Full Moon Party Night - August 11th

Up at 10am. Up at the main house, I do some cleaning, sweeping and have breakfast. Snorkeling and underwater pics on the left side today right below White Bay Villas. Darlene (Ivan's daughter) and two of his grandkids are here today. Nice to hear the sound of children's laughter here . Wow!! As usual, water is so clear, and it looks like feeding time as there are so many fish around for pics. Done in no time, back to Ivan's. He's been shopping so we all help him schlep the stuff up to the main house.

I grab a seat on the chaise lounge and try to dry my dreadlocks for my trip back to Tortola. Ivan's grandkids are playing in the water ask me "aren't you coming in?" Being an old softy (and, to be honest, missing my grandkids), what could I say but yes. Never mind, the fact, that my dreads when wet, feel like I have a mop on my head, and never mind the fact that even if I had a hair dryer (which I don't), my hair takes a year and a day to dry). Kids are definitely my weakness, so I jump up, figuring I can put my hair up so it doesn't get wet. Yeah, that'll work. WRONG!!! First thing, Ivan's grandson says is "aren't we going under the water to see who can stay down the longest?" Oh well, so my hair will be wet when I leave, I'll put on a hat. We look at all the fish swimming around our feet for a while, then, unfortunately, it's 3pm. and I gotta get ready to go. Taxi is coming at 4pm cause last ferry is at 4:30.

Back to Jaba for the last time. I actually take the time to sit on the porch (told ya'll I would), and just listen to the sounds of the camp for a few minutes. Get dressed, and say goodbye to Jaba (and, yes, I do actually say goodbye out loud) wherever I stay during my visits to the BVI, always saying "I'll be back." Can't put it off any longer, time is a-wasting. Hugs and goodbyes all around. I always save Ivan for last cause it's always the hardest goodbye and I always cry. This time is no exception. I start to cry and Annie looks at me, nodding her head, probably remembering our conversation about this very thing. Ivan says to me" now, now. None of that. We don't cry here. You know you'll be back as you have to leave to come back you know. I know he's right, but my feelings for Jost run very deep and always will. I don't know if any of you have one place that you must visit while in the BVI but I must visit JOST or my trip is not complete.

Bun, the cab driver is here so it's really time to go, Up the road, and even though, I know the terrain with my eyes closed, I look at it all again, soaking it in until I can come back again. Paradise Express is already at the dock. Load my stuff, take a seat, look around and sigh. There's another boat sitting at the other side of the dock, which I hear people say is the new boat they have already christened, and hope to have running soon. I take out my trip report to update it again. A man and his wife get on and while I'm working on the report I hear the wife say" Shh, she's writing." I look up and he asks me if I'm a writer. I tell him no, I'm just writing a journal so to speak of my trip to the BVI. He tells me they saw me at the Soggy Dollar yesterday and I was writing then too. He also said he thinks it's a great idea as you could relieve where you went and what you did while there.

Finally, underway, take one last look, and then face forward,. Off to my next adventure. FULL MOON AT BOMBA SHACK TONIGHT!! . I still have five whole days left in PARADISE.
I've been so spoiled this trip, I don't think I'll ever do two weeks in Paradise again in the summer. It has to be three weeks unless for some reason I can't.

Decided on the ride back to West End, I want some wings and pina coladas , so I'm off to Pusser's again. Run into Belle the barmaid and said "I was just coming to see you". She laughed and said "I bet you were." Look in the window of a small shop. Buy a shirt that reads - RUM IS THE ANSWER, WHAT'S THE QUESTION. Finish and try to gab a cab to Bomba's, which is not as easy as I thought. Finallly, I get a cab driven by Capt. Friendly who stops along the way to pick up pizza for his family . Get to Bomba's and am surprised to find it not too crowded. Grab a ride back to Rhymer's, change clothes and back to Bombas. Still not overly crowded. Bomba tells me tourism is off and Full Moon and No Moons have not been as crowded since 9/11. I remember Full Moon used to be so crowded, you had a hard time walking through the dance floor. Not this time. I have some painkillers , hang out with Bomba most of the night.

There's a film crew from Holland, and Bomba said they've been here for a few days. They do a short interview with Bomba. Finally, we take a few people back to Sophers, then back to Rhymers. Good night Irene.

TUESDAY - August 12th - MiniCountdown

Wake up at 9pm feeling like a wet rag . Feel like I need a painkiller to kill the pain. Wait a minute!! That's what got me feeling like this in the first place. Hmmm, maybe some hair of de dog??? Plus, I'm starving, but I'm also not cooking. Settle for Big Banana's burger and fries, then back to lalaland. Finally up at 4pm and decide to do some swimming. Run into Charmaine relaxing in the water. Down the beach to Quito's for one of Fitz' pina coladas , then off to the market for a few staples. Check out the Chicken Lady, then back to Rhymers to dress for Quitos. I don't think I'll ever get tired of hearing Quito singing Little Feet and/or Paradise. EVER!! Finally back to Rhymer's. Good night Irene.

WEDNESDAY- August 13th -MiniMeCountdown

Up at 9am. Feeling guilty, I do some walking and it feels so good . Snorkeling by Da Wedding, take some pics of the fish. I've heard they sunk a barge up the beach, past the dock, so I check it out. Man who lives across the street says the barge is not too far out so I try my luck. He's right, the barge is not too far out and there are a lot of fish feeding on it. I'm fascinated so I take several pics of the barge. Back to Quitos for a Pina Colada, then it's dinnertime. Off to Bombas for the last time till next time. Run into Charmaine, Jerzeegurl and Ada and Betty Hang out for a while, then it' off to Chicken Lady for that last chicken leg and fries. Back to Rhymers and bed. Good night Irene.

THURSDAY - August 14th - Majordomo Countdown cry:

Up at 9am and wouldn' ya knw it? Cruise ship is in. Have some breakfast then we'e off to Brewers Bay. Pelicans are having a field day so there must be a lot of fish down there. I go in and immediately see two large tarpon. I swimover to where the pelicans are en masse and I see why. There are HUGE and I mean HUGE schools of fish there. So many, I' afraid to swim to the other side of them. (HEY I NEVER SAID I WAS THAT BRAVE!!). Take several pics and we'e off again. I head to Quitos grab a pina colada, and sit outside on the new extension all by myself, soaking it all in. Charmaine walks up, we talk for a while. I finally get a chance to see Quito' mom.

Back to Rhymers, feeling low , cause time is fast approaching for that last ferry ride. Ecline stops me and ask if I'e heard what's happening in NYC. My heart sinks and I think about 9/11.
Turns out there's a massive blackout affecting NYC and some other states that started about 4:20pm. It's 5pm now and my first thought is to call my sister. Sure enough, she tells me there's no telephone service at all and the only reason she got my call is because she's on the bathroom wall phone. My concern right now is the airports since she also tells me all the airports (JFK, LaGuardia and Newark are closed, and tomorrow I'm supposed to fly from SJU, on to Ft. Lauderdale, then on to LaGuardia. Well, at least I'm prepared.

Change my clothes for Quito's where I run into the ladies again and we have a good time dancing to Quito and the Edge. It has been such a pleasure meeting some of the ladies from the BVI TTOL board.

FRIDAY - August 15th - Time to Leave Paradise

Well, I knew this day was gonna come. It's actually time to go home, Been here so long, and it's been such a good trip, I'm sad, but not as sad as I am usually when it's time to go. He's still asleep, so I take this time to say my private goodbyes to CGB. Out on the sundeck, take pics of Quitos, reminiscing and OH MY GOD!! There's a beautiful rainbow that wasn't there a few minutes ago. Is that an omen or what??? I take some pics with a smile on my face and feel much better, go back to the room, wake him up and watch the news trying to get an update on the situation in NYC. I was hoping things would be resolved, but hear that power is still out and airports are still closed. Then I start to hink about my freezer which I keep stocked in case my kids or grandkids come for a visit.

PRIOR REFERENCE TO THE FEBRUARY 2003 TRIP

I also know I'm gonna hear about this when I get back to work on Monday. I also visited the BVI in February 2003 but never had time to do a trip report. I was down for a week and stayed at a beautifful house called Mauby View. The owners and their children lived downstairs and we stayed one of the bedrooms in the upstairs apartment. The view from the patio was magnificent, and it had all the comforts of home . We spent a lot of time watching TV and I read a lot. Never did watch the news though. I had a most marvelous visit. Finally it was time to go back to NYC. Ferry from West End to STT. Feet dragging cause I don't wanna leave. Clear immigration, then drag me AND my winter coat to customs. The custom agent looked at me, looked at my coat, and loked at me again. Then he asked me "where ya headed?" I tell him I''m going back to NYC. He says to me "not today, you're not." I laugh and say to him "oh, you got jokes, huh?" One of the other officers says to me "didn't you know they're a big snowstorm in NYC and the airports are closed?" Yeah, sure. I laugh again, then notice they're not laughing. UH OH!! They tell me it's all over the news. OH, THEY MUST MEAN THE NEWS WE DIDN'T WATCH!! O.K.

Well, maybe. Just maybe. I tell one of the drivers I need to go to the airport and he tells me there's no flights going to NYC at all. DOES EVERYBODY KNOW? I tell him I'm gonna go to the airport anyway, so they can't say I didn't try. At the airport, no lines, no cabs lined up, uh oh!!! At the counter, agent tells me she can't get me out until Wednesday at the earliest. Then it dawns on me. If I'm staying in the islands, it's not gonna be in St. Thomas. Since the driver said he would wait for me, the only thing to do is check the time of the last ferry back to West End. Looks like it's out of /Red Hook but the driver says we can try to make it. Let's do this!!!

We're off. Driving past downtown ferry terminal, the driver and I look to the right and see - OHMIGOD - the boat is still there. He drives up and quickly turns to go back to the terminal. He tells me to jump out and see what's up. Yes, that's the last boat to West End and it's leaving soon. I feel so good. Thought I was going back HOME, and I am -- back to my second HOME - the BVI. Grab my stuff, pay the driver (with a generous tip of course) and thank him profusely. Without him, I wouldn't have made it back. Hop on the boat, and finally take time to breathe. Finally, what I've done sinks in . I'm on the way back to the BVI with no place to stay, everybody assumes I'm on a plane back to NYC right about now and I'm due back at work Wednesday. Obviously I won't be there. So I call my job and leave a message saying "this is my dog ate my homework message." Uh, I'm stuck here in the 90degree weather in the BVI because I understand you guys are having a blizzard up there so the airports are closed. And, UH, I won't be in to work on Wednesday, cause I can't get a flight out until Wednesday. Uh, see ya Thursday. When I did get back to work Thursday, my law clerks told me they played my message over and over whenever they wanted a laugh. I got so much grief that week, so I'm sure to hear about the blackout story too. Well, that's two crazy occurrences. Wonder what's in store for my next trip?? Anyway, back to the present.

(TO BE CONTINUED)
