I'm arriving by air to St Thomas but heading to BVI via Red Hook ferry. Does anyone have any advice about taxi service reliability/availability/cautions? I can see per person prices online but do they really charge $2 per bag? Does that include carry on size stuff? Would it be better to get a private taxi since there are 6 of us plus luggage? Thanks!

Kevin Campbell is the go to cabbie. Friendly, reliable and affordable. His phone is 340-643-0025 or email him at kevintaxi101@yahoo.com He knows all of the ferry schedules and really saved my in laws last May. We don't use anyone else. He will meet you at baggage claim with a sign with your name on it and get you to the ferry dock with plenty of time to spare.

big question, why are you going to Red Hook? yes, they charge $2 a bag including carry ons. Airport to Crown Bay, 2 miles, 5 minutes, $5 a head + 4 bags (2&2), yes $18.
Kevin and Rachel (340-771-2986) are great. we did not bother with a private taxi for such a short trip, and we landed at 10:30pm

Private drivers are fine but you should know that there is a taxi coordinator just outside the baggage claim area (which is open to the outside so you can see it easily...it's a small airport ) and all you have to do is say there are six of us to Red Hook and say what time the ferry is you want to catch. Just ask if you can be in a cab that just goes to Red Hook esp. if you have a tight connection. If they do make any stops, it'll be on the way. Note that at high traffic times, they are likely to take the route over the mountain which avoids all the traffic at the downtown Charlotte Amalie ferry dock, the usual "drivetime" jam in town as well as the jam-up at the cruise terminals. At any flight arrival, there are usually a dozen or more cabs and most are 7-9 passenger size. Yes, they charge for each bag they haul that goes in the trunk (carry your personal bag of course but luggage does go in the trunk). You will be all set. Have fun!

I agree with you 100% as being the "GoTo Guy" for all your Transportation needs. Just call him up and tell'em where & when you want to go & he'll be there "On Time". If you lose the # like we did when on the beach, just ask any of the local for Kevin Campbell. You can't go wrong with this fun to be around Cabbie...

Actually it is $2 for a small bag and $4 for a large bag. Small is technically defined as 20" x 30", if I recall correctly. All the official rates are posted in the dispatch area outside the luggage area and all drivers are required to carry the same rate sheet, which includes baggage charges. It might be highway robbery, but at least it is licensed, regulated highway robbery ;-)
