For vegetables and fruit - it has to be US Import in Sandy Ground. The owner's brother has a farm in Dominica and they bring out a lot of great French stuff as well. Much better than those mutant tasteless Dutch tomatoes at Food Center! US Import also has a great Deli and the best seafood on the Island (the plane comes in every Thursday and, yes, they even have fresh oysters)!

The meat at Ospaz Supermarket on Airport Road is almost frighteningly cheap. The owner is Venezuelan and it comes from South America. Great Value, good meat. Chicken Breast, T-Bones, Ribs - prices must be 30% lower than anywhere I have seen and it tastes fine. Don't bother buying anything else there - the bread is awful and prices are high.

For frozen stuff I would say Foodfair in Madame Estate takes the cake. For those who are craving a TV dinner or what-have-you this is the place. Deli is average but dairy section is reasonably diverse.

Rams... claim to fame is their International section but don't be fooled. Sangs in Philipsburg blows them away. Rams has always been good for cheap booze and one can get a decent hot lunch (local style) for under $4.00 everyday.

The new kids on the block - Cost-U-Less near the roundabout into Philipsburg are there for the voluminous, wholesale type shopping and have some fantastic deals as well as a more diverse 'american' style range of foods (yes I bought a huge chunk of US cheddar for 5 bucks). They also have a reasonably priced meat department but don't seem to be into Veggies and fruit much. Try the frozen jumbo shrimp - they are great... You can buy a TV too if you want!

Try Match for the real elegant foods and prices are not outrageous as usual because of the dollar's strength. They have a bigger range than US Import in many areas but parking is pretty horrendous so I shy away. US Import is cheaper.

Good ole' Food Center... Being half Dutch I love the place just 'cause I can get all my goodies like boerenkool, patat, croquets, and rookwoorst. They also have a wide selection of goods and have introduced a pretty funky Indian section now in Cole Bay - though I think they need to expand on their Mexican a bit. You can also get the right gear for a Greek tapas here - Taramasalata, Hommus, Tzatsiki, Pita etc.

The Chinese. Sangs rules for ethnic cuisine. It is Chaotic, and messy but they have a truly wonderful selection of asian goodies from Thailand, China, Philipines, Japan etc. (you can buy everything to make sushi here except the fish - at an excellent price!. It is by Bobbys Marina. The other chinese stores on the island seem to be an extended family with all the same stuff in each (a little like the chinese restaurant menus). It is cheaper and you can find decent frozen marlin and kingfish at times but in general the selection is an eclectic mix of Chinese, Dutch, and American.

Caribmon AWARDS...

Best Bread - Bakery next to US Import without a doubt.
Best Meat - Price + quality I would have to say Ospaz
Best Veggie and Fruit - US Import
Best International - Sangs
Best Bagels - Marias beside Burger King in Simpson Bay
Best Seafood - tie between US Import and Match
Best Booze - Rams
Best Frozen - Food Fair
Best Dutch - Food Center
Best American - Cost-U-Less

Ciao fer now...

Richard
