We just returned from a 5 day trip to the Westin at Our Lucaya in Grand Bahamas. Beautiful weather except for a short down pour the other day. Resort is beautiful with many oceanview front room.
We were on the 4th floor in the Breakers Cay large hotel smack in the middle with an oceanview. We overlooked one of the pools and straight behind it was the ocean. Nice balconies with each room. One side of the resort had Lanai suites where another infinity pool ran parallel to the beach. It was much quieter down at that end so we spend one day there.
All the action and larger pools and infinity was in the middle section of the resort. On the other side was the Sheraton which had more children but both resorts had more children than we are use to having around us on vacation.
Our first thoughts of the mega resort was it sure isn't St. Martin. We missed the intimacy of some of the St. Martin resorts and quietness at some of the beaches. There was lots of loud and obnoxious people, and teenagers drinking massive amounts of booze.
I am a Starwood associate and as such received a very nice "hotrate" on the room and also 50% F&B. Most of the allure of going on this short trip was my discount. I was in Nassau in 1996 and in Freeport in 1982 and really had no desire to return but when I was able to secure a hot rate we decided to cancel Turks & Caicos and instead go to the Westin resort. Without the discount food and beverages can be very costly. They have very good restaurants onsite. Asian, Italian, Caribbean. Onsite casino, several outdoor grills and a nice casual burger type place call the Prop Club. We gravitated toward the club late afternoon when we tired of the sun and noise. All restaurants are air conditioned which was a pleasure as it was very hot.
We only visited the casino once and my husband won at Roulette. Another evening we went to the Prop Club to hear karokoe. Several nights we went across the street to the Port Lucaya Marketplace but it was too crowded and hot and why pay full price for drinks when I can get them for half price back at our resort. Mostly we just let sand gravity hit us and didn't do much but beach/pool in the day and a nice meal in the evening with a cocktail or two and back to the room to sit on the balcony and relax.
Staff was very friendly and the place was clean and I always felt secure. If you are looking to stay an a mega resort with lots of activities I would highly recommend the Westin. Heavenly bed, heavenly shower and room has of course a caribbean decor. Desk along with chair, lounge chair in room along with HBO, SHO and many TV channels. Large closet with iron and ironing board. Blow dryer, and mini bar.
The Westin has a spa, and Westin workout down toward the lanai suite area but we did not take advantage of either. There were several weddings during our stay.
I'm a bit tired from the trip and probably should have waited to write this report but I put too much time and energy into the SXM reports and really don't want to do that with this report. If anyone wants details, PM me and I'll be glad to response.
