It seems Venezuela is distancing itself from US.
Venezuela to shrink US Embassy staff, require Americans to apply for tourist visas

I have been to Venezuela a couple of times and I have no desire to return. Also the people from country's surrounding Venezuela don't want to go there. So requiring visa's for Americans to me is a non issue. Unless you are looking for problems.

The same can be said for other South and Central American countries at one time or another.
Venezuela has some pretty Caribbean islands that will basically be off limits now.
