When my daughters backpack was stolen in Amsterdam with her passport, cc's and Eurorail pass I called my AMEX office here and they had a rep from Amsterdam call me in STT - he sent a car for her, got her a hotel room and got everything replaced in under 24 hrs. It is their International service that keeps them in business - try calling your Visa/MC/Discover/Capitol One rep for that kind of help.

Don’t get me wrong LocalSailor the fact that Amex helped your daughter is fantastic. The issue arises among merchants. Years ago we took Amex and have since discontinued that practice. While fantastic for the card holder not so much for the merchant. We as a business would need to raise our prices to absorb the ridicules discount rates charged by them. Nothing comes without cost.

Re kids in a Safari - make sure they are told to stay seated - I've seen kids almost get bounced out of those.

Manpot said: I gave up my platinum AmEx when we moved down here..hardly anyone wants it..Cap One is the only card I use and love it..terrific customer service too.. I have had mixed success with AMEX cards in the BVI. I don't recall ever using AMEX to rent a car in Tortola except with the major chains at the airport. Typically I use Jerry and he does not take AMEX but he takes my VISA every time. Dean in Anegada doesn't accept AMEX but other cards are OK. Don't remember what I have charged in Virgin Gorda, but some kind of card is OK. Still, I never travel without AMEX. The airlines take it for tickets and in-flight charges and whatever else. Native Son ferry uses AMEX for the boat ride. Pusser's West End, Sugar Mill, and Rhymer's in CGB all accept AMEX. Bobby's Market accepts VISA but not AMEX, same for Red Rock restaurant and Bananakeet, just off the top of my head. Most merchants I know hate AMEX.
