Just curious what everyone's favorite marina/base to start a charter is: Nanny Cay, Maya Cove, Wickham's Cay, Soper's Hole, Road Harbour, etc. Why? General ambiance, boats, grocery, hotel, pool, breeze. etc.
Thanks

If I chartered based on the marina/base it would certainly be Sunsail/Moorings...but I don't.

I like The Pub <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/drinking.gif" alt="" />

I don't have much experience beyond Moorings but Moorings/Sunsail is close to shopping, close to the ferry and has a pool which is a bonus. After a week on the ocean a pool feels divine!

The BVIYC base was pretty basic but conveniently located to RiteWay. The moorings base is definitely built up more but not sure that matters too much to me. I like the look of the Voyage base but haven't chartered with them...yet!

Nanny Cay has everything you need and the best bathrooms on the island

Never been to Nanny Cay, but we'll be there regularly now with our boat being there once we get it to the BVI.

We haven't been to all of them, but it's Nanny Cay for me - as long as there is A/C on the boat. Great showers, nice big pool, on-site restaurant and a couple good provisioning options nearby. And Horizon has always been great to deal with when we've used them in the past. Only downside is it's a bit further from the airport than some of the other bases.

We also like Soper's Hole as there is plenty for the crew to do while we're going through the checkout procedures and a decent store that is walkable for provisioning. Also a nice place for a sleepaboard. And it's always a treat to be on a Voyage boat.

That said, the base is one of the last things that we consider when chartering a boat. Availability, boat model and year, amenities on the boat, price, charter company reputation, and overall condition of the boat are all the primary factors we prioritize. If all of those are a toss up between two companies then the base may come into play.

Matt

Matt, Stephanie will love it. Are phasing out to Horizon?

Kinda hard to answer this question...

We love CYOA and charter from them every chance we can. They are in CA, STT.

Nanny Cay has the best showers in the Caribbean, as far as we have seen so far. Marble, private, air-conditioned.

We really like the laid-back atmosphere at Leverick. The TTOL deals there area great!

We have favored Tortola Marine Management (TMM) for many years. It is close enough to downtown Roadtown to walk and is easy to get in and out of. Fuel dock is nearby for refueling at end of charter and the Ft. Burt Hotel is across the street if you need it. Small charter base but family owned and well run.

I would rank the Moorings showers as equal to Nanny Cay. They are virtually the same.

I would rank quality of charter base as the least important factor in my trip. My 2 cents.

Nanny Cay & Moorings are equal for us. We like to that Horizon has smaller boats with generator AC so that tips the scales in their favor.
