Does anyone have current information on the need for International Drivers License (for Canadians) while renting a car in USVI, Virgin Gorda, Anegada? <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/canada.gif" alt="" /> <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/canada.gif" alt="" /> <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/canada.gif" alt="" />

"You need a local temporary driving permit to drive in the British Virgin Islands. You can obtain a permit at any car rental agency or from the Traffic Licensing Office upon presentation of a valid Canadian driver’s license or an international driving permit.

Traffic drives on the left."

The BVI does not issue temporary licenses any longer. You drive on your home license. I'm not sure if it's allowed for 1 or 3 months, but long enough for most vacation folks.

FYI - An International Driver's License (it's actually called an International Driver's Permit) is a document issued by "travel clubs" like AAA (in the US and, I believe, in Canada) that is NOT a "driver's license" but a document that translates the information on your government issued Driver's License into several different languages so officials in those countries know you have a valid driver's license. By itself, it does not give anyone the right to drive in any country since it is not a "license".

Anyway, if you have a valid Canadian Driver's License and it's in "English" there is no need to have an International Driver's Permit drive in the BVI's. You just show your Canadian DL.

The temporary drivers permit that is issued by the BVI is only required for longer term visitors. The first 30 days it is not required, just use your regular Cdn license.

Great feedback ... thank you. On previous trips we have not had to produce any other document other then our Canadian DL so were curious if rules/laws have changed. Thanks TTOL for your continued brilliant advice. Cheers !
