We're booked on "LIBERTY", a 2017 50ft FP Saba for 10 nights beginning 4/9/18 out of BVIYC. If you're out on her right now, please bring her back safely! joy

Don't worry about any left-over rum. We are happy to empty those bottles for you! dance

What I would really like to know is if anyone has previous experience on a Saba 50, will you please post with any information that you think would be helpful. Any tips, problems, thoughts, likes, dislikes, recommendations, suggestions.... We will be 5 adult couples and one adult single. Planning a counterclockwise trip, including 2 night on Anegada after two nights at Leverick, weather cooperating.

Some rambling:

We're counting down the days till our arrival in Road Town on 4/9/18! We originally planned this trip almost 2-1/2 years ago for our second bareboat charter with BVIYC which was supposed to happen beginning 11/15/17. Irma destroyed our plans as it did many others, which was nothing compared to the loss of the locals. Six of eleven of our original crew backed out on us immediately after the news of Irma. The other five of us are return "pirate-wanna-be's" to the BVI. duel Obviously the six that bailed didn't know what they would be missing! Once word was out that we were back on, we quickly filled our cabins with great friends.

To our amazement, BVIYC quickly picked up the pieces, and then bent over backwards to reschedule us for this upcoming trip. I just can't say enough good things about how Cassie & Abbie handled things for us. I know there are many others there who worked hard to recover, but C & A are who we dealt with for our first charter a few years ago, and now with this one. I have read many other awesome stories about other local charter companies, but I just can't imagine using another unless for some reason BVIYC just couldn't accommodate me.

We sleep aboard on April 16th, leaving Road Town on the 17th. We will be on a Lagoon 450 named Sunshine. This will be our 23rd trip. Stop for a cocktail if you see us.

Thank you bvichree. I will definitely post a trip report! One of our crew members has been practicing with a drone so we should have some great video too. We plan to follow your lead, and do this again and again. After 6 trips you must have this down pretty well. My wife & I are definitely still figuring out the ins & outs of organizing a trip of this size but we are getting better. I think next time we are downsizing the boat and the crew.

Colleen, I don't think I will ever make it to 23 trips, but what a wonderful dream! Truly inspiring! (I like your countdown ticker!) We will definitely give you a shout if we see you out there.

Shannon

We fly out on Friday, April 13th, staying at Nanny Cay for 3 nights before our sleep aboard. That's why my ticker show only 8 more days!

I am watching this thread with great curiosity. We are chartering a Saba 50 from Horizon at the beginning of May so I too would like to hear all about the boat. I have questions about the kitchen, how well the fridge/freezer works and how large they are as I am provisioning for 8 people for 10 nights. My husband; on the other hand, would like to know the technical/sailing side of things, so whatever info comes will be helpful. Luckily we had nobody bail after the hurricanes, even with 4 newbies on board. So far, every time we bring newbies we have them hooked, hopefully that will happen again this year! I really look forward to your trip report Shannon. Only 25 days until we are back in Nanny Cay!

I can't wait to hear about it! Liberty was supposed to be the boat we went on in January but a week before we were supposed to go they said it wasn't ready yet. We still got to go down but with a different boat and company.

On another note, while we were there we saw another Saba 50 TENNESSEE WALTZ that we had looked at before and liked through BVIYC....only it didn't have a mast and couldn't sail, so the large group motored everywhere. They all appeared to be having the time of the lives!

I chartered a Saba 50 from BVIYC three years ago for the BVI Regatta - yup they had a Cat division, which is exactly that: no one took it seriously but a great reason to get us down. I have chartered over 20 times everything from 40 to 58. My fav boat of all-time is a Lagoon 450. I have chartered a Lagoon 520 (and the 500) which I would take over the Saba 50 (also chartered the Helia 44 but prefer the Lagoon). However, while perhaps not my fav the Saba 50 was a great boat in many regards. The space and comfort will be fine for your group. Loved the outdoor lounging areas both upfront and up top. The refrig/freezer will be more than adequate and worked well on our vessel. For your hubby: for some CRAZY reason our boat did not have a main halyard electric winch - (yes I am old enough that my first three boats did not have one) but this boat really needs one. It took 10 minutes (even w someone jumping the halyard) to raise the main. Adding to the frustration the square top main head was not properly lashed so we had to climb into the bag to jury rig a system that worked. Those issues aside, she sailed well, maneuvers well and I am confident that overall you will love her.

Thanks for the details windward2c. I figured that the fridge/freezer situation would be adequate but it is good to hear first hand. Fingers crossed this Saba 50 has an electric main halyard winch. We do have some strong backs in our crew if we need to jump it though. I will also mention to my husband to watch the main head. We chose it because of the space for our large crew so I am glad to hear that you loved all of the outdoor lounging areas. Thanks!

Not putting a electric halyard winch on. 50 foot cat with a 1000 sqft plus mainsail is a criminal act! I can’t imagine the one you are chartering will be without one.

We were supposed to be on the Tennessee Waltz in November and were surprised to see it back in charter so soon. The owners were able to identify her in one of the many photo's circulating around on the internet showing the wreckage soon after Irma. Hard to assess damage from a photo but she looked to have faired much better than a lot of boats around her. I'm happy to see that she is back in the fleet.
The Saba 50, Liberty, does have two electric winches at the helm. Im pretty sure Tennessee Waltz did too.

Only two days till we head down!

edit:
Just saw this great news update onTennessee Waltz Facebook page. Looks like they got her a new mast and she is ready to sail!

Sail Away on the Tennessee Waltz- a Saba 50 Catamaran in the BVI
March 23 at 12:38pm · Road Town, British Virgin Islands ·

And....great news!

The Tennessee Waltz is once again a sailing vessel!!

ReelTrouble - I guess you're already onboard, but I just sent you several tips based on my experience with my Saba 50, Cuvée.
