You can pay $60 to have your application expedited. You can pay a third party to expedite it for you. Or you can schedule an appointment wirh a passport agency/center if you are traveling in two weeks or less.

I thought that if it expired you'd have to re apply. Guess not from these replies.

Sorry I just realized what I said in last post applies to lost or expired over years. As long as you have original to return it should be about 3 weeks. You could tell them you're traveling sooner an dit may be expedited for a fee.

Go to Travel.State.Gov. Look at info for US passports. It should answer your questions.
