For Many years , about 35 , we have bare boat sailed the BVI.....always flew in thru puerto rico, overnight and then flew into beef island airport,Tortola.

This next trip in may 2019, we are planning on flying into to STT.....( from LAX, thru MIA to STT ) and then ferry to Road Harbor, Tortola the next day.. Need a decent overt night hotel room within walking or easy taxi ride to the ferry terminal in Charlote amalie .

Two people, just something nice and clean and not undergoing re construction.

Price range , reasonable $ 150 to $ 200.00 per night . Arr : STT, 1:30 pm, may 12 th . for overnight.

Any suggestion from the USVI experts out there ?

Thank you,

Denny and Erica

We have started using Emerald Beach, right by the STT airport for our last night and it is a short taxi ride to the ferry terminal. Windward Passage is right across the
street from the ferry dock, but their prices went way up on us in a strange way. The first and only time we stayed there booking through booking services was very
high, but a direct phone call got the room to something like $129., which was fine. But after that booking services and direct phone calls were way up near $300.
We call Emerald Beach direct and get a decent price, plus it is right on a nice beach. Nice room, bar, restaurant. So, we have re-booked for May. Good luck and
have fun.

Olga's Fancy in Frenchtown. Just a short stroll to a handful of restaurants and bars, and a little further to the ferry terminal. Clean rooms and reasonable rates, and a great little pool.

I've never stayed there, but the website for Olga's Fancy looks very cool! The one problem for me personally is that apparently there are a lot of stairs. The location is great though. Otherwise, I'm personally familiar with the Crystal Palace, an old time STT gem with a lovely view out over the harbor and a great host! Also Mafolie, which has a STUNNING view out over the harbor and also features a restaurant onsite. Have also stayed at Windward Passage, which was OK, but apparently they want a lot of money for it now. For $150 or so, a good deal, but for the reported $300, no freaking way..

look into The Green Iguana -- just above town, clean, very well run and comfortable. Definitely affordable too.

Emerald Beach is probably your best bet. On the beach, restaurant, bar, everything close. Stayed there a while back and liked it, no complaints Good service,

I stayed at Windward Passage a couple of weeks ago and paid $149. Not sure where the $300 rate is coming from.

I second the opinion of Olga's Fancy. Stayed there recently and loved the convenience. We were there for the last night after a bareboat charter and will do it again. The restaurants in Frenchtown were great. Candy the owner was very accommodating. We did not find the stairs a problem.

Marisol--I've had TWO knee replacements, so right now, stairs are an issue for me. But as I said, otherwise, the place looks great!

Sorry Carol. I didn't know about your knee replacements. That would certainly be an issue!

No problem, just pointing it out, for anyone else that it might be an issue.

2nd this hotel.

I'd like to be a jelly fish, cause jelly fish don't pay rent.

We stayed at the Green Iguana for two night prior to a Caneel trip four years ago. It was very clean, icy AC and management was delightful.

I'm not a shill for Windward Passage but I know they recently renovated 50 rooms. New FFE and laminate floors, paint, etc in the rooms. They still have rooms offline from Irma damage but on the whole the property looks great. Call the hotel for accurate rates. If you are looking for a location close to the ferry terminal this is it. If you are looking for an island feel goes elsewhere.

Thank to you all,

Great recommendations, and will get together with Admiral Erica, and explore every one of your suggestions.

We know zip about St. Thomas, so this trip will be a very new experience .

At this time, we are talking a couple of days on St. Thomas, and have to explore what to see and do,

That will be whole new thread, as I will do some research first and select what feels good to us, and then ask opinions.

Emerald Beach gets our vote..we too have see the Windward Passage go waaay up. The rooms there are nice but the layout of the Windward Passge is awful and the bar doesnt open til 5! The bar at Emerald Beach is really nice with Tyler the friendly barkeep. The restaurant food is decent and the rooms are very nice IMHO. Call them direct to get the right price..but they do add service and tax.

Just returned from STT and stayed 1 night at Green Iguana. The hotel was mostly deserted (meaning QUIET) and the owners/hosts Gwen and John were delightful. No pool but you do get iguanas, hummingbirds, and other flora and fauna as companions. Confirm A/C is COLD & view is excellent.

99 Steps are a short walk and The Green House Restaurant is 10 minutes walk away - don't miss the bang bang shrimp!

If you are exploring for a couple of days make sure you do the 99 steps tour (knees permitting). Have have a look on your left, as you ascend, at the remnants of Hotel 1829. Stayed there in the mid-90s when it included a restaurent and again in 2009. A truly unique building and hopefully the current onwers will get it restored and operating again. The amber waterfall in its courtyard was a nice feature. https://stthomassource.com/content/2018/03/04/hurricane-repairs-underway-at-hotel-1829/

a bit farther up the hill is Galleon House....now if your are looking for a workout on the stairs then THAT is the place to walk to and it has a pool as your reward for making it up all of the steps.

Galleon House is to the left at the bottom of 99 Steps - and to the left of 1829 --if facing 1829 Galleon house is left and 99 Steps is right - 7Arches Museum is on the 99Steps and BlackBeards castle and Green Iguana at the top.
