Michael and I elected to spend the day at Kokomo. We've read the previous not so good reviews here but had a nice time last year. We were not disappointed this year either.
We were greeted by two lovely french women who showed us to some very comfy loungers on the beach. Loungers are free if you eat lunch at Kokomo.
Shortly after settling in, Sam, the "beach boy" brought us a second umbrella since I stay out of the sun but like to be on the beach. Michael and I ventured into the water. WOW! The drop off was a steep one and the waves were HUGE. Additionally, there were a lot of rocks on the sea floor. But once we got out deep enough, we were okay just bobbing amidst the waves.
Getting out was a challenge as my knees are fairly arthritic but one big wave came along and lifted me to shore.
We enjoyed the music of waves crashing onshore til lunch while we read.
Lunch was delicious. Michael had the ceviche salad and I had the chicken caesar salad. We are amateur chefs at home and caesar salad is one of our specialties. This one was EXCELLENT. Michael's salad was also excellent.
The only drawback I could see at Kokomo was the prices were a bit high. But the service was excellent. Attentive without being overbearing.
We headed back to the beach. Unfortunately, a large group had taken up residence at one end of the beach and decided that the entire beach must want to hear their music. But that was not enough to deter us from a short afternoon listening in between to the sound of the waves and enjoying our books. As we sat this afternoon, some delicious scents were wafting over us from the kitchen. Something Indian perhaps. It was mouthwatering (and I am not much of a fan of Indian cuisine)
I do believe we will go back there again tomorrow. This afternoon, we swam on the left side of the beach (as you look out into the sea) and with the stone breaker further out, the waves were significantly less which was nice. The bottom was still rather rocky though. I recommend wearing water shoes if you go in.

OK, I've read this several times and I don't get it--There was a huge drop off into the water, the waves were huge, there were lots of rocks on the sea floor, the prices were high, and some idiots down the beach were playing loud music. And you're going back tomorrow... I don't get it..

The waves were huge on one side. The other side had a breakwater that prevented large waves. We just tried the wrong side first. Other people were swimming in the big waves and loving it.
The prices at the restaurant were high, yes. The food and service was excellent. I don't mind paying for quality food and drink.
And it is not the fault of Kokomo that there were "ugly americans" down the beach.

OK, still doesn't make sense to me, but so long as you are happy, that's all that matters..

She said the lunch was delicious and the service was excellent, I am assuming that made up for the condition of the beach and the waves. It sounds like it was maybe a windy day??

Just didn't sound like an incredible day to me, but glad she had a good time. To me, if some idiots are playing loud music at the other end of the beach, I don't care if it's the restaurant's fault or not, I wouldn't go back there the next day, as they will probably be back...

I had a less than stellar experience at Kokomo a year ago but went back in June anyway. I'm glad I did as it was a great experience. I didn't go in to the water but food (I also had the chicken Caesar) and service were excellent. I wouldn't hesitate to go back.

And yet, when I posted about miserable service and bad food at Dreams, everyone told me I needed to go back to give Bruno another chance. THAT's what I don't understand.

Prices are high and beach is so so at Dreams also. Everyone has their own level of tolerance for annoyances and we should respect their choices.

Dreams has built a fan base based on a lot of positive experience, Kokomo has not yet on this forum. Many know Bruno from years of top notch service, most have no clue who owns or runs Kokomo.

Just because i have two cents to spare i will chime in. MY wife and i went to kokomo last year to check it out since we have been watching the development for a couple of years. The food and service was phenomenal, yes expensive but we enjoyed every bite of what we had. Didnt go in the water but could tell that you had to pick your spots but it is a beautiful beach for sure. Not a whole lot of shade but when the landscaping comes in it will be a prefect spot.

I would recommend this place to anyone anytime with no hesitation!

I'd love to try it too, where is it? I was never impressed with Dreams...the service was horrible when we were there!

Does that road have guardrails? I am terrified of heights and I look at that road from afar and it scares the beejesus out of me!!

On the dutch side past Divi Little Bay coming from Phillipsburg.
The beach IS definitely a "pick your spot" but the landscaping is beautiful in the area.

I am actually quite afraid of heights and I have no problem on that road.

Thanks for the report on Kokomo. Just for comparison, do you remember the cost of the Chicken Caesar Salad? And as you said chairs and umbrella are free, so that has to be factored into just how expensive is it. Thanks.

Next SXM visit -November 2023. Also January 2024.

Really? Wow, just looking at it from the other road gives me the willies. Again, is there a guardrail at least?

It really is not that bad going down that hill, not as bad as the alternate route over the hill.

They have a menu online at www.kokomo-sxm.com. It seems that some of the pricing has come down a bit since I last looked at it, specifically the burger which now does not list Kobe beef. I am close in my estimate of about $32 to $34 was what the Kobe burger was listed with Cheese and Bacon in November.

Along the lines of there is no single place that will please everybody I think we have spent two days at Kokomo but one was rained out on the beach but we had lunch there twice and it was good and we had no issues with the service. But, it did not draw us to keep coming back. That is not because it was expensive or that there was something specific we did not like it just did not feel to us like a place that had the gravity to pull us back in. About as scientific as I can state it.

We might go back if we are in that area or plan on going into Phllipsburg for a bit but it will not be a place that we go out of our way to get to at this point.

Cheers!
T

The thoughts of traversing that hill makes me very queasy, so needless to say, I haven't been there yet and have only heard second hand reports, sadly more less favorable than favorable but I always maintain, we all have different likes and dislikes and thank God we don't all prefer the same place. We'd never get served.......

We've also enjoyed most of our meals and days and evenings at Dreams and while I love their beach furnishings and I'm more than willing to concede that Bruno is a great guy, I don't personally find the beach itself to my particular liking.

Of all the island beaches with destination restaurants my favorite is and has long been Friars Bay Beach Club (and no, I've never experienced the sewer/sulphur odor people often speak of) so.......

If only they could take Kokomo's view and couple it with Dreams beach furnishings and the FBBC meals and service, and then locate it all closer to the Maho-Mullet-Cupecoy area where we stay, what a perfect dream place that would be!

Respectfully,

Hi Pat...what about the beach at Dreams do you dislike? We were going to go for the day today, however, i am a lover of going in and out of the water all day, without rocks, nice sandy bottom, etc. Maybe dreams best saved for dinner?

Pat, ah but if they did that, then EVERYONE would go there.
I am a huge fan of FBBC. And I love the view there as well.
Kokomo is just one more place for us to go.

As for the cost of the Caesar salad it was $18, which I think is pricey. But, as I said, the chairs and umbrella (and in our case the extra umbrella) are all free.

Again, as for traversing that hill, as someone said, it is FAR easier than the alternate path over the hill to Cole Bay. And there is some really beautiful landscaping to look at too!

I was not really liking the look of he hill at first either but decided to let curiosity get the better of me. Surprisingly not nearly as crazy as it looks. Don't let the hill intimidate you

An yes, Cake hill. We do take that road, but somehow I feel there's land or hills on the side and I won't drop off into oblivion if we go off the road....lol

Todd it seems as if the French Fries are now a separate item so with the $22.00 for the burger, $3.50 for the fries & who knows how much for the bacon (it is $3.00 at breakfast) it still comes in at a hefty $28.50 & it is not kobe.....

We all have our favorite places & of course one of mine is Dreams but I don't know if I would go to Dreams if the bacon cheeseburger with homemade fries was almost $30.00... I don't mind paying for good food but there is a limit for me as to how much I will let you pick my pocket.

Will they have a SC at the new Mc Donald's in Margot? Burgers should be under $20.00

We were there today, stunning beach and view but like others have said it is fairly rocky getting in and out. Luckily we had water shoes which definitely helps. We loved the vibe there, they were bringing all new furniture in and it was beautiful. We opted to eat lunch there and the chairs were free. Our lunch for 4 with 2 mixed drinks, a bottle of water and 4 meals came to $137.00, quite expensive but the food was good. We enjoyed the water to the left as it was much calmer then the water to the right of the rocks. We really enjoyed the calmer beach setting but if we go back we would skip lunch and just pay for chairs and maybe have a few drinks.
