By all means having a car to get around is a must do. Driving is nutso's but very manageable once you catch onto the Rules?of the Road.
Rule 1 - At any given time any spot on the road can come under contest by two (often more) vehicles. Most fequently intersections and round-abouts. He who gets to that point first by whatever means possible wins and is automatically awarded right-of-way, until the next contest. Contests occurr as often as possible, sometimes seconds apart. .
Subrule A to Rule 1 - Suiscooterists don't play, they know they have the right-of-way.
Subrule B to Rule 1 - The larger the vehicle the more right they have to use the brute force method to proceed to the contested spot.
Subrule C to Rule 1 - Once right-of-way is awarded it's ok to stop and chat or wait for the next left turn contest. Anyone behind you is assumed to be on island time.
Rule 2 Island time disengages when getting behind the wheel. Drive as fast as possible - always. However, if a friend is seen along the way, island time re-engages and it's permissible to stop and talk. All drivers behind are assumed to be on island time. If someone passes you while stopped, refer to Rule 3 for extra points.
Rule 3 It is mandatory to pass as many vehicles as possible on any given journey. The greater number of vehicles passed at a time, the greater the sport. When oncoming traffic approaches refer to Rule 1 to return to correct lane. Merging into your land as close as possible to the oncoming traffic is an art form.
Rule 4 - Third Lane. The white stripe in the middle is consider a full lane by suiscooterists. They will use that lane at all times in any traffic conditions, also refer to Rule 1.
Subrule a to Rule 4 If wearing a helmet, do not fasten the chin strap. Not to worry that upon impact the helmet will fly off before head encounters something very hard.
Rule 5 - stop and allow other vehicles to enter traffic flow or to make left turns - alot, then wave. This keeps the whole mess going.

The Saving Graces of Driving - As nutso as the driving looks, there's actuall several things that make it ok. You typically drive slowl in most areas, the island is small, doesn't take much time to get from anyplace to anywhere. The locals are polite drivers even if nutso and often stop to let you pull into traffic or to make a left turn (don't forget to wave). No road rage like we see here. The scariest driving I had on the whole trip was when I got back onto the freeway headed home
