Just returned from a week long vacation in Maui. It was as beautiful as ever. Although the carribbean is pretty, I don't think it can compare to the beauty of Hawaii. Very green, very lush.

Spent most of our time on Little Makena beach. It has been about 10 years since we have been there. We did go to other beaches during our visit, but Little beach was where we spent most of our time. Got to know some of the local during our visits and were really able to get the "low down" on the beach and some of the "regulars" that visited on a daily basis. The beach still has the 70's hippie feeling to it. A lot of young "drop outs" hanging out and I don't think that was tobacco they were smoking. So if that sort of stuff bothers you, then I would reccommend you go to another beach.

Little beach is only about 200-300 yards long I would guess, so it can get crowded. We visited during the week and did not go during the weekends. The morning is the best time to go. Very scenic and serene in the morning hours. You can find a good spot in the morning, but by mid afternoon, you will have people sitting close as it does fill up quickly. The north side of the beach is considered the gay end, especially over the rocks.( I would not suggest any strait guys venture over there in the afternoon as you may be mistaken for wanting something you really don't, if you know what I mean.) The rest of the beach was filled with mainly couples, both locals and tourists alike. A few gawkers/curious tourists make the hike over from big Makena to see what it is all about. It seemed that more ladies came over then men. They would come over in groups, spread out there beach blankets and pretend not to notice the naked people. It was sort of funny. You would think that after hiking all the way over from big beach, they would, at least, want to try a quick skinny dip. Some did. One or two in the group would take their tops off and run giggling in to the water. Most of the rest would follow. The ones that gave it a try seemed to be having more fun then the ones who did not.

We were told that the police have not issued any citations for nudity in 9 years. The only time the police came over is when they were called. We did see them once. Most of the people are pretty well behaved, but like anywhere, you can have some bad apples. One day we and others witnessed this un-savory character come to the beach and sit next to people's belongings when they were in the water. This person did not have even a towel so that was a clue on what he was up to. He came and sat near us one day and I kept a pretty close eye on him But the instant I turned my back, my wife saw him reach in to someones bag and try and grab a camera. So did the people who owned the camera. They saw it as they were returning from a swim. They chased him but luckily he was not able to steal anything. One of the locals gals said that during the summer months, some of young kids come down there, and, with the use of hand signals and other aids, they helps each other steal from the tourists. So the morale is, don't leave any belongings un-attended. Or at least ask someone to watch them when you go for a walk or swim.

Anyway, had a great time and just loved little beach. I highly recommend it. Let me know if you have any questions.
