It sure looked like it was dicey there to begin with, but it might have been an optical illusion.

i think the crew running around the deck was showing that it was indeed dicey. At one point he overcorrected and the starboard side was about to swipe the pilings. Pretty good manuevering in my book

Bow and stern thrusters do the work. They were working to correct.

No stern thruster. You use the engine to move the stern sideways

As usual, I show I don't know anything about boats--<img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/Laugh.gif" alt="" />--how does the engine, mounted all the way aft, cause the boat to move sideways?? Cruise ships have side mounted thrusters toward the back, I think...

There are 2 engines and if you put one in forward and the opposite one in reverse, the boat will pivot. With the aid of a bow thruster that you can clearly see working , the boat can move sideways. an experienced captain can move a twin engine sideways with out a bow thruster. Cruise ships are another story! I've maneuvered and docked yachts up to 140 ft with no bow thrusters. You let the wind do a lot of the work.

Some pleasure yachts also have stern thrusters but to answer your question if you put one engine in reverse and one forward you can technically "spin" a boat. Water current and wind will have effect also. With a single screw it's a little more difficult as most will pull to port while in reverse.

I said THIS ONE does not have a stern thruster.

And with a single screw in reverse there is a way to counter act the drift in the direction of the rotation of the propeller. But that is another story.

Mine was a single screw and I was able to figure mine out after lots of practice. As you know every boat handles differently in different current and wind conditions.

my single screw did not maneuver very well at all after i chopped up the prop on a reef. That was an interesting docking situation. Also had a tail wind.

If you look over on the right side of the screen you can find some other cool videos of SXM including a drone scan of the meg-yachts on Snoopy Island and a PJIA one from a cockpit with a lot of air traffic control chatter. Also if you look carefully there two KLM 747's at the terminal. Wonder why?
