Day 3
After a very laid back breakfast and coffee out on our lovely porch, we decided to drive around to the leeward side of Tortola and do some exploring. Thank goodness for 4 wheel drive!!! Wow, those roads are steep and narrow...and driving on the left side made my brain go into a kind of stupor. I'm sure it had nothing to do with the rum and cokes from the night before, however, be forewarned driving is somewhat hazardous on that side of the island.
Among our favorite finds was the restaurant, Sebastians By The Sea. All I can say is "WOW"! The very sweet server sat us at a table overlooking the ocean that is maybe 20 feet away. I must digress for a moment at this point and bring up another Tortola for Dummies moment. I had read in one of my guidebooks that the residents are very laid back, but expect a greeting to proceed a question. I realized this first hand when I walked up to one of the servers sitting at a table outside the restaurant talking to another server before their shift started. It was about 15 minutes before the restaurant opened so I ran up and asked her what time they were going to open. She glared at me and said the restaurant doesn't open for 15 minutes. I started to leave, but remembered what I had read in my guidebook about minding your manners, so after a couple of minutes I approached her with a very cheesy, "Good Morning! What a beautiful day. Would there be any way we might go sit inside and enjoy the view while we're waiting for the restaurant to open?" She immediately responded positively, seated us, and brought us a rum punch with a little shot of Sebastian's Rum. Oh my gosh!!! We are now hooked! I'm too embarrased to report how many bottles we bought, but suffice to say it wasn't enough. We just finished our last bottle last night and are trying to figure out how to get some more. I'm finding out that nobody sells it anyplace else except in the restaurant. If anyone knows of a place I could order it, please let me know. We love the stuff!
The food at Sebastians was phenomenal!!! Hubby had a dolphinfish sandwich and I had chicken roti with both mango chutney and kuchela as sauces. The kuchela was spicy, but fabulous on the roti. I would highly recommend it. And the rum...forget about it....don't try it unless you want to be hopelessly hooked like we are.
The rest of the day was spent driving around taking pictures of beautiful vistas followed by another evening of porch sitting at sunset. We are so into vacation mode now we hardly remember the fast pace of our lives just a few days before. It's a good thing...
