Has anyone visited Peter Island and hung out at Little Deadman's Beach? Eaten at that grill? Wondering if it is worth the ferry ride over or if it is one of those 'you are not staying here, so you are a second class citizen'. Still trying to figure out right thing to do for one day off cruise ship. JVD sounds really nice, but husband really hates the 'herd' effect of cruise excursions. Thanks all!

You might do better at Marina Cay. Ferry is free if you eat there and they welcome day visitors. Also good snorkeling.

RatmansWife, thank you for the idea! I had not heard of that Cay before. Do you know if they have chairs and such for rent? How often is the ferry? Any details would be greatly appreciated or you can PM me. Thank you SO much!

I don’t know if Marina Cay would be a good cruise ship stop. The ferry has been a little “on demand” recently. I sure would hate to miss the boat

I agree - I think Marina Cay is very risky. You also have to get yourself all the way to Trellis Bay from the cruise dock - about a 30 minute cab ride - and figure in the time to get back. You are much better off getting a day charter out of RoadTown -- as for Peter Island, it is definitely not a cruise ship day spot. As far as I know, their ferry is for registered guests only. You can spend the day there if you are anchored on your own boat in Deadman's Bay -- but there is no transportation there for non-guests other than the ferry that brings workers over.

Peter Island isn't a bad choice. The ferry runs every hour and a half or so (Google the schedule), and takes only about fifteen minutes and $20 round trip.

Although technically you're not allowed to use the pool, no one would stop you - but why would you want to? Deadmans Bay is just a short walk from the ferry dock and is beautiful. Again, technically you're not allowed to use the chairs reserved for guests, but again no one would stop you, and there are plenty.

If you're really adventurous you can walk to Great Harbor for a nice snorkel. If not, you can enjoy the beach at Deadmans, have a nice lunch ($$$$) at the beach grill, and even rent a windsurfer or sailing dinghy if you want.

Stop at the gift shop outside the lobby of the resort in Sprat Bay (close to the ferry dock), buy a T-shirt, and say hi to Charity for me!

When are you going? Off season or shoulder season should be no problem, peak season perhaps.

Have bareboated, anchored, spent the day there on the beach, eaten at the beach bar and had drinks and used the chairs etc but in the summer -- Have never had an issue -- have always asked permission via VHF before landing, have spoken with the Beach Guard (yes, they have them) and cleared with them when we arrived. My perception has always been that as long as you appear to be "a belonger" will be no problem. Sometimes they have preferred we use their towels to appear as guests sometimes not -- wierdly varies based upon the person there at the time. Have never been made uncomfortable or unwelcomed and have many great memories. The beach bar staff have always been cheerful and helpful -- as always, speaking to them, asking their name, being friendly goes a long way. While "legally" they do not own the beach, they can control who uses their stuff -- Good food, great bar drinks, beautiful surroundings -- always one of our favorite stops. Would increase CC limit before the trip......

Peter Island is a great spot to visit for a day and there is never any problem getting the ferry there. Just call in advance to confirm the times so you don't miss your ship's departure time. Let them know how many there will be in your party and they'll add you to the list of passengers.

I take my family and visitors there at least 3 or 4 times a year and have never been made to feel unwelcome. Of course, we always defer to resort guests and make sure we aren't making nuisances of ourselves.

Go and enjoy it. The spa is a wonderful stop for a pedicure or massage too! I always leave there with happy feet. <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/Grin.gif" alt="" />

We have stayed at the resort a number of times, the most recent being June of this year. I seem to recall that they said the beach chairs closest to the beach bar/restaurant are for non-resort guests. I've seen day visitors each time we've been there, and the resort staff seems to treat them in a friendly manner. One of the water sports attendants is a bit grouchy (to everyone), but other than that, the staff are lovely people.

As someone said, day visitors can pay for the ferry ride from Roadtown and it normally runs right on time. We've taken it several times when we were staying elsewhere in the BVIs, then went on to stay at PIR. Its a short ride, maybe 20 minutes.

The main beach, Deadmans, is a lovely, scenic place. If you eat at the restaurant, you have a great view across the beach and out to the water. They had beach service for drinks when we were there. You can also order a lunch at the restaurant and get it carry-out if you want to eat on the beach.

There is some snorkeling to the left (as you are standing on the beach) and out to the mouth of the bay. There is a huge elkhorn coral with lots of glassy eyed snappers peeking out. Sometimes its too rough to snorkel there, but if its calm, its a nice little snorkel.

To YachtReprise - Charity was working at the front desk (instead of the gift shop) when we were there. She was quite happy to have that job. She is a nice person and we enjoy chatting with her.

Hi all, been sick and finally better and back on for trip planning!! I emailed Peter Island resort and they emailed back...were nice... said Little Deadman Beach is open for non-guests and chairs, if available. Who do you call to confirm the ferry? Sounds like a nice day to me!! I do need to confirm the ferry as can't miss the boat.
We'll be there next month. Hope it won't be too crowded. I figured November may be 'low season', but not sure. Thanks for the info!

The ferry is privately operated by Peter Island Resort primarily for their guests and staff. Contact the resort.

That's what I thought as well, Tom -- from some of the posts here, it would appear that's incorrect?

The 'ferry' is indeed run privately by the resort - but my experience is that they stick to a strict schedule. They have several choices of boats, and usually use the big one for the heavy staff changes, and the smaller ones midday,

As an anecdote, it's funny that they continue to refer to the Roadtown terminal (actually, Baugher's Bay) as the 'Old CSY dock' - although CSY hasn't been there in about 30 years!
