On our first trip to SXM in 1990 we were talking to a young woman at the tourist desk in P'burg. She said we should go to the Pelican presentation to collect a free cruise to Anguilla worth $75 per person. We went, we spent the whole day deciding to buy a unit at Flamingo (then part of Pelican). We ended up with two tickets for the sail to Anguilla on the Gandolf, a gorgeous sailing vessel (RIP, sunk in Simpson Bay in Hurricane Luis). We have been to SXM every year since. Eventually we bought three more weeks on the resale market. When they started to build the Villas at Simpson Bay--with a view to retirement--we bought 8 weeks so that we could stay in the same unit in prime time, and sold our other four weeks. We still look fondly on that Gandolf cruise and are happy with our two months in SXM every year. And having said that, today we would never ever sit through a timeshare presentation. And we would also never ever switch our eight high-season weeks for points.
