We've stayed on St. John once at the Westin. Almost every day, we took the rental car we had and headed out to a different beach. This worked out great and we had a great week!
So I don't think it matters too much. If you want to be close to restaurants..etc keep that in mind but otherwise its likely you'll take a trip somewhere each day anyway.
