For those masochistic/interested enough, all 1,700 odd photos from Kris and Mike's recent BVI trip are up. Since there are so many I've split them into two collections, one for Virgin Gorda and one for Anegada:

Virgin Gorda Picture Collection

Anegada Picture Collection

On the VG side, since my last post the new pics include:

Saba Rock
"Out and About II", more stuff from driving around
A lot more Long Bay snorkelling pictures
Sunset at Giorgio's

The Anegada side has a ridiculous number of new pics since the last update. In particular there are about 600 new snorkelling pictures. If you look at anything at all, I think some of the best pictures are in these two:

Loblolly West Snorkelling around the Canyons

Cow Wreck snorkelling around the canyons

Both of these are snorkelling sets, where many shots are taken in 15-30 feet of water. What I love about them, and what makes Anegada such a unique snorkelling location, is the depth of field and "3D" effect you get. A combination of lots of sunshine, very clear water, and coral heads in 20 feet of water that come up to within a couple of feet of the surface makes a very dramatic panorama. I have seen similar sights on other islands, but typically they're really, really difficult to get to. For example, on Bequia there are fantastic coral heads on the north-western side, but you need to take a long swim and then navigate a treacherous maze to get to them. On Anegada its a straightforward and short swim out. On Loblolly, very short indeed, and accessible at any tide. On Cow Wreck it's much further out, and is difficult unless you're near high tide, but still easier than anywhere else.

Scuba divers may scoff at these, since they can pretty routinely get to some truly spectacular stuff a few fathoms down. But for those of us stuck within free diving range of the surface (and who lack the breath capacity of Snuba Frank!), Anegada is tough to beat. Some particularly juicy ones:

Loblolly I

The two spotted eagle rays down deep (Loblolly)

Mike Diving down for a shot (Loblolly)

Cow Wreck Depths

Ray at about 12 feet (Cow Wreck)

BTW, can anyone identify these fish definitively? They looked like tarpon to me, but they were hiding under some very deep rocks and were hard to get a good shot of:

Tarpon?

I only wish I had a few thousand dollars to buy really good equipment....

Enjoy,
